Evaluation #7: Looking back at your preliminary task. What do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

For the preliminary task, I created a School Magazine front cover. First of all, I viewed other official school magazines on Google like "Hampton School" magazines, I found this useful because I could see what kind of devices were used on the magazine. The devices I commonly found were maskheads, which were found at the top of each magazine, synergy as the colours were themed, usually of the school colours themselves, there was always an action shot of a student working as the main feature of the front cover.

After I researched on what School Magazines were like, I began to make my magazine. I called my magazine "LADDER" because the anchorage fixes the meaning of the learning ladder as the background with the mask head. This represents the learning ladder and how it is the schools job to make their students achieve, this anchorage advertises the school well by making it seem that the school will make you achieve more than you're capable of and succeed in self-actualization. This technique promotes the school and makes the reader who are parents to want to enrollee their children into the school.

For the text I used a variety of typographies and colours. I challenged typical methods of making a magazine by not having all my colours in complete synergy. I used an array of hot colours to convey the school as warm, welcoming and also appeals to my second target audience, the students themselves. This makes my magazine unique and different from others. I tended to use bold typographies because they were clearer to read, if for example my magazine was on a shelf, it would be the first to be spotted. The typographies also looks sophisticated to make the school portray as smart and organised towards the reader while still being clear. The colours also contrast with each other, this made each part of the magazine jump out towards the reader and catch their attention.

For the central image, I used an action shot of someone working taken from a video. I edited the picture using Adobe Fireworks and Photoshop. I created a school environment from the picture showing a student hard at work, this is a good central imagine because the magazine is trying to sell the school, and parents want their children to do their best, it was harder to do however it give me more possibilities.

On the strapline, I linked it to maskhead with the theme of the ladder. This continues the idea of success and how every parent wants their children to do well. It denotes on the maskhead to convey that this school is successful, it is in a gold typography to also suggest success and winning.

The featured stories on my School Magazine attract both parents and the student audience. The stories that concern my student audience would be the exam tips and prom sections of the magazine. This is because students want to know what the school is like and how to revise best as at the end of the day, as the magazine creates an enigma; the students would want to read it. My featured stories for the parent audience would be the exam results story, this is because parents would want to know what kind of exam results the school get to see if they're good to send their child to the school.

In the first place, I wanted to use a hot colour for the actual background of the magazine but I then chose white because it seems more professional and a hot colour for the background of the magazine would blend the text colours more. I also wanted to create a sense of theme to each area around the magazine, so I used certain colours for certain things. For example, in the prom section I used pink to convey the love and happiness that is at prom.

Overall, the preliminary task helped me with my Music Magazine because it gave me ideas on how to make the writing stand out and practise of programs like Fireworks and Photoshop which I used a lot in the making of the music magazine. For example, I learned how to fit a picture inside a shape and how to change the gradient of the writing correctly. It also made me think on what kind of picture I should use, as it should be an action shot and have something in it to suggest what the magazine is about which I considered when taking my pictures.

Looking back on my preliminary task, it has helped me develop and understand how magazines function a lot more. Before the task was set, I was unaware of the use of pictures that made an effect of the product. My creative process made me more aware of what to expect in a magazine. It was clear from my drafts that I did not grasp the idea of how magazines were constructed but along the course, my preliminary task helped me determine what good things I should do to make my magazine much more realistic and eye catching for the reader. Working with different fonts and colours and technologies overall gave me a better understanding of how free you can be with magazine constructing and how easy it is to test out new ideas.
